One controlled study in aging adults looked at the effects of ballroom dancing on brain health versus more mundane exercises. Ballroom dance, which incorporates physical activity with mental stimulation and social interaction, had a measurable impact on the part of the brain associated with memory.

The control group – the ones performing more mundane exercises like walking and biking – didn’t see the same positive effects.

Another controlled study out of Japan tested two populations of adults with mild cognitive impairment. One group performed physical exercises and another performed combined physical and mental tasks.

Combined physical and mental activity significantly improved cognitive performance over the exercise-only group.

Bottom line: If you want to improve your memory, thought-processes, reaction time and overall brain function, it’s best to incorporate physical and cognitive training.
